Comparison of contemporaneous and retrospective assessment of postoperative pain using the visual analogue scale.

We have assessed postoperative pain in 50 patients who had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy, using repeated contemporaneous and single retrospective visual analogue scores. There were significant correlations between the median, mean and greatest contemporaneous scores, and the single retrospective scores, but there was a wide scatter of results among and within individual patients. We co...

Clinical stress assessment using a visual analogue scale.

BACKGROUND Clinicians increasingly require short, efficient methods for assessing distress, both in applied research and clinical settings. Most of the available questionnaires are unsuitable for busy clinical settings. The visual analogue scale (VAS) is widely but empirically used to assess perceived stress. AIMS To provide evidence on two of the psychometric properties of the VAS: its discr...

The visual analogue scale in the assessment of grip strength.

The accuracy of information derived from a visual analogue scale has been assessed by comparing the measured grip strength of 100 subjects against their estimate of grip strength scored on a visual analogue scale. There was relatively poor correlation between the measured and assessed values, suggesting that similar inaccuracies may occur when the scales are used to assess subjective phenomena.

Complex regional pain syndrome after transradial cardiac catheterization.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disease with unclear pathophysiology. The condition is characterized by pain, soft tissue change, vasomotor change, and even psychosocial disturbance. It may affect the upper more than the lower extremities, and the distal more than the proximal. The trigger factors include carpal tunnel release, Dupuytren's repair, tendon release procedures, knee surg...

Visual analogue scales for pain assessment in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND In earlier studies, pain assessment in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) was conducted by interview, for which reliability is questionable considering the decline in expressive and receptive language abilities in AD. As similar language problems occur in young children, the reliability of pain assessment in this latter population is increased by employing visual analogue scales....
